Year of Engineering Campaign

Amey partners with government for Year of Engineering Campaign 2018

2018 marks the launch of the Year of Engineering Campaign - a year-long national initiative led by the Government, in an effort to inspire the next generation of engineers and widen the pool of young people who join the profession.

Throughout 2018, young people and their parents will have the chance to take a closer look at engineering, with thousands of inspiring experiences of engineering on offer throughout the country. Through bringing young people face to face with engineering role models and achievements, the campaign will showcase the creativity, variety and innovation of the profession. It will also highlight the opportunities and benefits of engineering careers for all young people – regardless of their gender, ethnicity or social background.

Amey has already taken great strides in this area – including working with Girl Guides UK to create an engineering badge, running a STEM programme, and running an apprenticeship scheme to support budding Engineers. Throughout 2018 Amey will be supporting the campaign by promoting Engineering as a career across our schools portfolio, welcoming school visits to our sites across the country, and facilitating events to celebrate the incredible work engineers can and do undertake.

Andy Milner, CEO at Amey, said; “The industry must do more to challenge stereotypes that exist in this field and to encourage the next generation to consider engineering as a career. We’re a proud partner of the campaign and trust it will be a fruitful one for all involved, to make our industry better for the future.”

Secretary of State for Transport, Chris Grayling, said: “Engineers – whether they are working on cutting-edge technology in aerospace, energy or artificial intelligence – are vital to the lifeblood of our economy.

“We want to show young people and their parents the immense creativity, opportunity and value of the profession. By bringing them face to face with engineering role models and achievements we can send a clear message that engineering careers are a chance for all young people, regardless of gender, ethnicity or social background, to shape the future of this country and have a real impact on the lives of those around them.”
