Guiding girls into engineering

Guiding girls into engineering

Hundreds of girls are to benefit from a new challenge which aims to inspire a new generation of female engineers.

Amey, one of the UK’s leading engineering and consultancy businesses, has worked on the Engineering badge for members of Girlguiding in local communities.

The idea behind the new badge is simple: to promote the diversity of engineering, and inspire the next generation of female engineers by providing the girls with an opportunity to explore engineering in a safe and fun environment.

Kirstie Jones, Head of HR for Consulting & Rail, has been part of the development team at Amey. She said: “Engineering is all about solving problems using technical and practical skills, and we use our know-how to overcome challenges in the sectors we work every day. But a shortage of skills, and women, in engineering is a problem that our entire industry is facing so we’re doing everything we can to help address this issue.

Girlguiding has a long-standing history of creating ground breaking badges to support young girls’ development. What better way of using our world-leading expertise than to create a fun, engaging way for girls to find out more about what modern day engineering is really all about.”

A spokesperson for Girlguiding said: ”We are thrilled that girls in the local areas will be able to benefit from this Engineering badge, and we thank Amey for lending us their expertise. Girlguiding aims to help all girls increase in confidence and realise their potential – and there’s every chance that the next engineering superstar is among our members.

“We’re looking forward to working with Amey in the future both on a local and hopefully national scale on this important initiative.”

In addition to creating the tasks and requirements for the Engineering badge, the design was created by Ikeena Ezea, who joined Amey in 2015 as a graduate.
