Amey Signs Extension to Hampshire County Council’s Term Highways Maintenance Contract

Leading public services provider Amey has signed a one-year contract extension with Hampshire County Council based on its success delivering efficiencies, customer satisfaction and a productive partnership with the Council.

Amey’s seven year contract to maintain Hampshire’s 5,000 miles of roads and footways began in 2008. This one-year extension will take it up to 2016.

Amey’s key achievements in Hampshire include:
  • £2 million reduction in the County Council’s highway maintenance budget whilst maintaining expected service levels
  • Maintaining the County Council’s customer satisfaction levels for highway maintenance as the top performing County Council in the South-East, and ranked fifth overall nationally
  • Co-location of Amey and County Council staff at depots, delivering greater integration, enhancing communications and enabling a joint approach to service delivery

The County Council's Leader, Cllr Ken Thornber, said: “Our partnership with Amey has developed positively and we are confident that, in continuing to work with them, we can continue to provide a high level of service in highways maintenance for our residents. This will include our ongoing commitment and investment in Operation Resilience to improve the condition and strengthen Hampshire’s highway infrastructure which is essential to ensure the economic growth in the county. .”

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said: “We are extremely proud of our achievements to date on the Hampshire contract and are pleased that these have been recognised with this contract extension. We look forward to continuing to partner with Hampshire County Council to provide an excellent service for Hampshire’s local communities.”

Under the extended contract, which is worth £35 million per year, Amey retains its responsibility for all aspects of road and footway maintenance in Hampshire. Due to the success of the work to date, there is also potential for Amey to secure two further one-year extensions taking the contract to 2018.

The term highways contract covers routine and planned maintenance of Hampshire's highway network outside Portsmouth and Southampton, excluding the motorways and trunk roads which are maintained by the national Highways Agency.
