Amey recognised for sustainable redesign of Liverpool Lime Street

Amey has won the 'Active Travel Scheme of the Year' award for its transformation of Liverpool Lime Street at the Highways Magazine's 2023 Highway Awards, as well as being highly commended for a further four awards.  

The award recognises Amey’s best in class approach to innovation and design that benefits both the community and the local environment. Amey worked with Liverpool City Council to provide a ‘concept to completion’ service to transform highway infrastructure on Lime Street, creating a new world-class public space and arrival point into the city centre, befitting the iconic Lime Street train station and Grade I listed St. George’s Hall.  

The project was a key part of a wider programme known as Liverpool City Centre Connectivity aiming to create safe, sustainable infrastructure fit for the future, helping mitigate impact of climate change.

Team of the Year Award 

In partnership with Arup, National Highways and Pinsent Masons 

• Amey successfully delivered the preliminary design and the accepted DCO application of the A66 Northern Trans-Pennine (NTP) Project. The A66 NTP is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project and involved the preliminary design of over 20 miles of dual carriageway through both urban and environmentally significant rural which will improve safety, reduce congestion, and improve the reliability of people’s journeys in the north of England. 

 Major Project Award 

St Patrick's Link Road - Department for Infrastructure 

• The £160M St Patrick's regeneration site is a remarkable undertaking for the Department for Infrastructure NI. The project delivered a 2.4km long link, designed and project managed by Amey, which enhances active travel linkages between north and south Ballymena. A range of innovative measures were implemented, aligning with the redevelopment project’s goals. 

Winter Service and Climate Resilience Award 

In partnership with Transport Scotland, Bear Scotland and DBFO contract providers.

• The partnership was recognised for the new winter service contracts on the Scottish trunk roads The teams demonstrated excellence in winter service, climate resilience, extreme weather mitigation and adaptation or climate impact and recovery. 

  Best Use of New Technology Award  

WSP in partnership Transport Scotland, Amey, BEAR Scotland, Breedon Contracting, Aggregate Industries, Tarmac Contracting and Highway Data Systems. 

• The partnership was recognised for electronic data monitoring during highway construction, which included automating on-site quality assurance through sensors, GPS, lasers, and software.
