Local jobs for local people

Local jobs for local people

Journey to Work events taking place to promote local job vacancies and providing careers advice and top tips on CV writing and interview techniques.

Amey is working with Staffordshire County Council, Walsall Council and Hays to host several Journey to Work events, with more planned nationally in 2023.

Following the success of Journey to Work events in Staffordshire and various locations in Scotland, more are planned to support local people looking for work or in need of top tips to help them into employment.

Upcoming events are free to anyone to attend and run from 10am – 4pm.

  • Wednesday 12 July, Walsall Library HUB, Lichfield Street, Walsall, WS1 1TR.
  • Monday 17 July, Staffordshire County Council, 1 Staffordshire Place, Tipping Street, ST16 2DH.

Highways Maintenance Operative, Jess Banbury took that stepping stone towards her goal, when she attended the Stafford recruitment event last year. Questioning whether family commitments and lack of experience would hold her back, Jess was proved wrong, being recognised for her transferable skills, and offered a role on the Amey and Staffordshire County Council Highways contract. Jess adds: “I am so glad to have found a job that I love, where I have been able to learn new skills and gain experience in the highways industry. I have been fully supported by Amey to work around my home commitments, which has meant that being a single parent hasn’t had to be a barrier to progressing my career.”

Karen Hopley, People Director for Transport Infrastructure at Amey, said: “We understand that finding work can be incredibly difficult, that’s why we’ve put together an event to help provide local people with the skills and support needed to get them back into work.

“Jess is just one example and has now become a real asset to the Highways team, bringing a positive ‘can-do’ attitude and strong work ethic. Jess has now found a career path she enjoys, and we’ll continue to support Jess in her career with Amey. The Journey to Work event is a valuable event to attend, for anyone looking for work or needing helpful tips to support their job search.”

Representatives from Amey’s recruitment team, recruitment agency Hays, Staffordshire County Council, and Walsall County Council’s careers team, will be on hand to share local vacancies that will be available for people to apply for at the events, all they need to do is to bring along their CV.

There will also be a host of career experts available throughout the day to offer advice and guidance: from writing a CV, to applying for jobs and completing job applications, to interview techniques and understanding what to wear.

These events follow Amey’s first successful Journey to Work event which was held last year in Staffordshire. More information about the event can be found by clicking the link to a short film here.
