Amey supports military community enhancement in Leicestershire
Through its defence contracts, Amey, a provider of critical infrastructure services for Government, has worked alongside the client, the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) to enhance the lived experience of Service families in Leicestershire.
Over the last few years, there has been significant investment at Kendrew Barracks which has seen Amey and DIO refurbish three existing playparks, install a brand new one, and replace a derelict tennis court with a multi-use games area.
However, an opportunity arose to complete this work by refurbishing a fourth playpark. Despite the equipment which had been installed more than 20 years ago being serviceable, many of the spare parts were now unavailable. The timber fencing surrounding the area was also in poor condition, rendering the area less than family friendly.
The decision to start from scratch, using the initial footprint, was made following discussions with Amey and the client, with the aim of providing a sustainable, long-term solution. In addition to the revitalised play area, a multi-use goal/basketball area was added to expand opportunities for older children.
Amey worked closely with supply chain partners, Proludic, to successfully deliver the project within a six-week period. The result is a vastly improved, inclusive playpark designed for up to 75 users, catering to children from toddlers to teenagers. The inclusion of picnic benches also provides a communal space for social gatherings.
As a welcome development, this playpark will play a crucial role in helping families relocating from Cyprus during the Unit move over the summer, helping them settle into their new environment.
Mike Hipkin, DIO’s Housing Estate Officer, said: “Thanks must go to the collaborative working relationship between the local Amey and DIO teams and to VIVO Defence who removed the overhanging branches.”
Tom Silvey, Amey’s Director Defence added: “This project is a shining example of collaborative working, where stakeholders joined forces to create a vibrant, family centred space that contributes to the wellbeing of Service families. Amey remains committed to putting families first, by building a stronger and more connected community.”
