Amey support Barnsley Council to gain funding to implement its decarbonisation plan

Leading provider of critical facilities services for local and national Government, Amey, has helped Barnsley Council secure £1.3 million from the Government’s Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme operated by Salix.

Salix is a non-departmental public body, owned wholly by Government, that provides Government funding to the public sector to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. Their Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme enables local authorities to tackle climate change by delivering energy efficiency schemes and heating decarbonisation plans.

Working alongside Barnsley Council, Amey along with BMSI (Building Management Service Integrators) reviewed current energy metering systems and building controls across the 11 schools maintained by their FM operations. They then provided the Council with intelligent options to reduce consumption, better manage the heating, ventilation and air conditioning, and drive efficiencies and cost savings across the systems currently in place.

As a result of Amey’s recommendations, the client has installed new hardware and made changes to their building management strategy; these actions, combined with an enhanced metering capability, mean that Amey are able to identify areas of the estate that demand more energy and apply a plan to reduce or eliminate energy wastage.

Amey’s Barnsley facilities management team is now working with the Council and BMSI to identify further areas for improvement and monitor energy closely whilst exploring future options to further enhance the buildings energy efficiency.

Ian Warren, Account Director for Amey’s Barnsley Schools contracts, said:

“We have great relationships with Barnsley Council and we understand their need to meet their carbon reduction target by 2035. We are delighted to be working together with the schools and the Council to help them achieve their target and to create positive, energy efficient schools that the pupils of Barnsley can be proud of.

Amey are keen to enhance the schools energy reduction capabilities. We will be interacting with the pupils and schools to help drive a better understanding of how the schools use energy and what impact pupils and teachers can have to reduce usage further.”

Tim Cheetham, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “We are committed to doing everything possible to reduce our carbon footprint. Having secured our grant as part of the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme, we are now looking forward to working with Amey to make our schools estate much more energy efficient, which will help us achieve our Net-Zero ambitions.”
