Environmental award for Amey’s utilities team
Amey’s utilities power team has been awarded silver in the Environmental Best Practice category at the annual Green Organisations, Green Apple Awards.
The Green Apple Environment Awards is an annual international event recognising, rewarding and promoting environmental best practice around the world.
The nominated scheme was the flood prevention project on behalf of our client Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) at the Tealing substation near Dundee, Scotland.
Contracted by SSEN, Amey planned, designed and constructed a method of flood prevention as the substation has a history of local flooding from the adjacent ‘Fithie Burn’.
The new water channel needed to be constructed while allowing the existing ‘burn’ to continue flowing and preserving local wildlife. Another key consideration the team identified after consulting historical rain volume records was that the new waterway design needed to handle a ‘one in thousand year’ flood.
Working closely with sub-contractors, the Angus Council and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency to minimise any risk to the local wildlife, including the fish in the stream, our teams designed and constructed a meandering twin channel system. This new system can now manage up to 19 cubic metres per second of water volume flowing past the substation compared to the five cubic metres per second of the original stream.
With the project now complete and the waterway diverted to the new ‘burn’, frogs and fish are already starting to flourish in and around the new two stage channel. The risk of flooding in the local area has been significantly reduced safeguarding the infrastructure within the Tealing high voltage substation.
Amey utilities Power Director, David Tong said: “I am delighted that the hard work and dedication of our highly skilled teams has been recognised with this award. I want to thank everyone involved for their commitment to delivering for our client, for the community and the surrounding environment.”
Amey utilities environmental business partner, Dean Malik said: “During any work we carry out it is important that we carefully consider our impact on the environment and take the necessary precautions to minimise it. The team truly demonstrated their commitment to doing a great job and delivering a fantastic service for all involved.”
