Amey geared for growth in Birmingham as new cycle scheme starts

Amey’s highways team in Birmingham has begun work on a prestigious cycle scheme as part of Birmingham Cycle Revolution (BCR) - a city-wide project funded by Birmingham City Council focused on making cycling an everyday way to travel.

The A38 corridor scheme, worth £5.4m, will deliver a 4km two-way, fully segregated cycle route linking Selly Oak and the University of Birmingham with the city centre.

This latest scheme mobilisation comes on the back of a hugely successful period for Amey’s New Business team in the city, who have already delivered phase one of the BCR programme, and are currently working on a similar 4km cycle route on the north of the city. This is in addition to phase two of the role out of 20mph speed limits, bringing the total value of BCR works delivered by Amey to nearly £15 million.

Kieran Boyle, Lead Project Manager for Birmingham City Council on the BCR project, said:

“Since 2015, we have developed a close working relationship with Amey on the Birmingham Cycle Revolution Project to deliver a challenging programme. The Amey team have worked with us to drive value into the project by adopting a lean approach to design and delivery. The Health and Safety record of the Amey team has been exemplary as well, with no reportable or lost time incidents in a 25-month programme to date.”

Jenny Moten, Business Director for Amey in Birmingham, attributes the success to the dedication of the team and collaboration with Amey’s other services in the city, including the 25-year Birmingham Highways Maintenance and Management Service. She said:

The outcome of this project will provide the people of Birmingham a healthier lifestyle option through encouraging more cyclists to choose the bike and leave the car at home. We are extremely proud to be part of delivering this fantastic project alongside Birmingham City Council.”
