Amey wins Highways England contract to manage 230miles of East Midlands roads - worth up to £300million

From July 2016, leading public services provider, Amey will be responsible for maintaining nearly 230 miles of East Midland’s strategic road network under a new maintenance and response contract with Highways England.

Worth up to £300m over 15 years – including extensions – the contract covers one of Highways England’s busiest networks, including stretches of the M1, M69, M45 and M6.

In a step-change from previous asset support contracts, which deliver routine highways maintenance work – such as defect repairs, emergency incident response, traffic management and severe weather service along with other similar duties – this is one of a set of key new contracts in the East Midlands, where further supply chain partners will deliver design, construction works and specialist goods and services.

Amey will play a leading part in supporting Highways England develop this new supply-chain community.

Andy Milner, newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Amey, said: “We are extremely proud of our reputation for delivering high quality services for Highways England, helping to improve millions of journeys every year. I am therefore very pleased we have the opportunity to continue this work in another key part of Highways England's road network, putting safety and the experience of road users at the heart of what we do.”

David Poole, director for commercial and procurement at Highways England, said: “We are delighted to welcome Amey to our East Midlands supply chain community. The awarding of this new contract represents a significant milestone for Highways England, marking a real change in the way we have previously managed contracts.”

“Collaboration with our supply chain is key to our new way of working in the East Midlands and we are looking forward to establishing a successful, long-term relationship with the appointed contractors.”

Amey already manages and maintains the strategic network in the East of England in Areas 6 and 8 under the previous Asset Support Contract model.

The company is experienced in managing large complex projects simultaneously across aviation, central government, defence, education, local government, rail and strategic highways sectors.  This significant win to maintain routes through Northamptonshire, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Lincolnshire contributes to Amey’s considerable growth plans.
