Amey powers £11m upgrade to maximise service reliability of railway between Reading and Paddington

Leading public services provider, Amey, will be increasing the resilience of west London’s railway after being awarded an £11m contract by Network Rail to deliver upgraded power supplies. The upgrade is crucial to the future operation of Elizabeth line services as well as the modernisation of the Great Western Main Line.

Amey will be replacing obsolete power supplies as well as installing fully resilient new supplies for signalling equipment between Paddington and Hayes & Harlington – meaning that signalling systems can be automatically powered by separate supplies in the event of a power failure and thereby maximising service reliability.

The upgraded power supply will be complimented by a new signalling system being delivered by Alstom to add capacity and make it quicker and easier to travel to a range of destinations across London and the South East.

Andy Milner, Chief Executive for Amey said:

“We have a long-standing involvement with the Crossrail project, having worked on various parts of the programme over the last five years. This latest contract reflects our position as a trusted key supplier to Network Rail and I am pleased that we can continue support them through the delivery of essential signalling power supply systems on such a significant project.”

Crossrail will be known as the Elizabeth line from December 2018 and will be fully open in 2019. Brand new trains will allow passengers in west London and Berkshire to travel through the city centre to Essex and the north-east.
