Amey begins work on the Isle of Wight

Amey has begun a new, long-term partnership with Isle of Wight Council, worth £225 million over the next 25 years.

The contract sees Amey delivering waste and environmental services for the council, including managing kerbside collections, Household Waste Recycling Centres and waste treatment facilities.

The new partnership will see us:

  • Managing and delivering improvements at two Household Waste Recycling Centres on the Island
  • Operating collection services including residual, recycling, green, bulky and food waste collections, with a programme of improvements to be made to these services in 2016. You can find out more about the services we offer at www.iwight.com/waste
  • Managing waste treatment for the council. We aim to build a new, up-to-date mechanical treatment plant, as well as refurbish an existing advanced thermal treatment plant, on the Island – with both due to commence service in 2018. These technologies will deal with waste collected at the kerbside and through Household Waste Recycling Centres - as well as some locally-produced commercial and industrial waste - allowing us to sort and pull out recyclable materials, before using left-over, non-recyclable waste to create energy. You can find out more about our waste treatment proposals at www.amey.co.uk/iowwaste

To support the service, Amey is also delivering an Island-wide schools education programme and will open a dedicated visitor centre as part of the new waste treatment facilities being developed.

The partnership between Amey and Isle of Wight Council aims to recycle more than 55% of the Island’s household waste and prevent 90% of the remaining rubbish from being landfilled.
