Amey’s Monica Steele takes top position at Ground Engineering Awards
An outstanding engineer from leading public and regulated services provider Amey, has been awarded the ‘Young Geotechnical Engineer of the Year’ Award at the Ground Engineering Next Generation Awards.
Monica Steele, a Geotechnical Engineer at Amey, was recognised for her passion and commitment to engineering as well as her work as a Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador.
As a STEM ambassador Monica shares her wealth of knowledge and expertise throughout schools, colleges, careers fairs and female networking events to highlight the benefits of choosing civil engineering as a career. Monica is a mentor for new members of her team, including graduates and apprentices and is also working with the Institute of Civil Engineering (ICE) Build a Bridge STEM event.
David Spencer, Managing Director of Amey’s infrastructure consultancy business said: “This award is a fantastic achievement for Monica and recognises her dedication to the industry. The work that Monica is involved in throughout schools, colleges and careers events is helping inspire the next generation of engineers and influencing industry leaders - both vital for a world in need of more civil engineers.”
Monica Steele, who over the last 18 months was announced as third place winner in the prestigious New Civil Engineer Graduate of the Year competition, and this year was a finalist in the WICE awards for ‘Best Young Woman Engineer’ category said:
“I am delighted and very proud to have won this award. The standard of competition was very high and it was an honour to be chosen by the judges. To support the demands of today’s infrastructure we’re going to need a talent pool of engineers and technicians which is why we need to raise the profile of civil engineering, encourage diversity and promote the benefits of a career in this industry.”
The prestigious event was celebrated in London with over 100 professionals; a judge from Ground Engineering spoke of Monica’s success: “It is good to see someone coming into the industry through a less conventional route and doing well. Monica is very capable considering she only graduated two years ago. She has demonstrated passion both within her workplace and to promote the industry through STEM activities.”
