Amey's Hammersmith Flyover works achieve major industry award

Leading public and regulated services provider Amey has been presented with a major industry award for its innovative approach to strengthening the Hammersmith Flyover in London; the fourth award achieved for the project this year.

Amey triumphed at this year’s British Construction Industry Awards in the category of Civil Engineering Project of the Year (£3m to £50m).

The accolade was awarded for the strengthening work on the Hammersmith Flyover after it was closed in December 2011 due to concerns about structural defects in the post tensioning system.
The project has previously scooped gongs from the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers and at the London Transport Awards and was described by the BCIA judging panel as “an outstanding result” and “British Engineering at its best”.
Amey devised a new system that would work in conjunction with the existing post tensioning system, and its end-to-end capability provided early contractor involvement, allowing the site team to progress advanced works whilst designs were being finalised.

The `one team', collaborative approach taken by Amey ensured any issues were identified and rectified early, avoiding delays to the project.

The flyover returned to full load capacity by late May, as vital maintenance was carried out whilst traffic was kept flowing. The flyover was re-opened one week ahead of schedule in time for it to perform as a key artery on the Olympic Route Network.

Through innovative and collaborative working, the project was completed in just five months. Had traditional methods been used, the duration would have been closer to two years.

Andy Milner, Amey’s Managing Director for Consulting, Rail and Strategic Highways said: “This was a highly complex project and I am pleased that we have continued to receive recognition in the industry for our achievements. The award from the BCI is further testament to our commitment to deliver innovation in an efficient, timely and safe manner.”

This is Amey’s second BCI award having previously been recognised for the major project award in 2005 for the strengthening of Tinsley viaduct . Amey is the fastest growing consultancy in the UK and is relied upon to manage, improve, and maximise the performance of a vast range of assets vital to the effectiveness and sustainability of the UK.
