Amey awarded Traffic Scotland contract

Amey, one of the UK’s leading public service providers, has been awarded a £6 million Traffic Scotland contract by Transport Scotland.

The Traffic Scotland Operations and Infrastructure Service contract will run over six years and Amey will be responsible for providing a fully integrated service. This will improve information and journey time reliability for all road users, helping to keep traffic moving safely.

The Traffic Scotland contract will mean that Amey will manage and improve the technology on the whole of Scotland’s major road network. A key part of this will be the 24/7 operation of the new purpose built Traffic Scotland Control Centre at the Forth Road Bridge.

By using a range of new technologies, the centre will distribute accurate and timely information about incidents that occur on the roads, giving road users the chance to decide how best to use the trunk roads on that day.

The company has been Transport Scotland’s ITS (intelligent transport system) equipment maintenance provider since December 2004, and this new contract, providing a wider range of services will begin in October 2012. The contract also has the option of two, one-year extensions.

The contract will also include operating and maintaining almost 500 overhead lane control signals, and over 789 emergency road side phones.

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this important contract. We have been working with Transport Scotland for eight years and we look forward to further strengthening this relationship to help keep Scotland’s trunk road network moving.”
