Amey donates £100,000 to Oxford Cancer and Haematology Centre

Local firm Amey, which is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park, has fulfilled a pledge to donate £100,000 to the Oxford Cancer Centre.

Amey has contributed towards an integrated theatre (CIT) for the Cancer Centre, which allows high-definition images to be broadcast from inside patients’ bodies. This equipment will be used for keyhole surgery which reduces recovery time and the risk of infection.

The company has also sponsored the Amey Garden, which provides patients and their families with a space for reflection.

Much of the money was raised by Amey’s 11,000 staff, who staged a series of events including abseiling 100ft down the side of the hospital and completing a sponsored walk in Oxford University Parks.

Mel Ewell, Chief Executive of Amey, said: “On behalf of everyone at Amey, I am delighted to fulfil our pledge of donating £100,000 to the Oxford Cancer Centre. As a local company, we are proud to support the invaluable care the team provides to thousands of Oxfordshire residents.”

Mel Ewell joined Neil Ashley, Cancer Benefactor Board Chairman and Nick Maynard, Clinical Director of Surgery at the Cancer Centre, which is part of the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust to present a cheque in the Amey Garden.

Graham Brogden, Head of Community and Deputy Director of Fundraising for Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals Charitable Funds, said: ‘We are very grateful to everyone at Amey for all their support and fundraising efforts.  In such challenging economic times it’s inspirational to see a company and its staff show such amazing support for the Cancer Centre; support which will help thousands of patients and their families benefit from the facilities that have been funded.  I hope Amey’s generosity will encourage other businesses large or small to get involved with the Hospital.”
