Amey representative appointed as Chairman for the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation

John Sunderland, business director for the Inter-Urban division at Amey has been appointed as the West Midlands Chairman for the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

The Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) is concerned specifically with the planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of land-based transport systems and infrastructure. The West Midlands Branch is one of the largest of eighteen UK branches, with around 1000 members involved in stimulating debate on transportation issues and encouraging best practice in the industry.  The West Midlands Branch sits at the heart of the country and the heart of the transport infrastructure network in the region.

John Sunderland will take over from Steve Rowsell (previously Procurement Director for the Highways Agency), as chairman and will chair a committee that consists of representatives from consultants, contractors, service providers and clients.

John Sunderland from Amey commented; “I am delighted to be appointed as the chair for the CIHT, and I welcome the opportunity to work alongside a network of people with similar interests. The CIHT acts as a key forum to bring industry specialists together to help look at ways of protecting the environment as well as looking at ways to create sustainable transport infrastructure systems.”

John’s election as Chairman of the CIHT West Midlands Branch means that Amey representatives will hold the chair of two of the key learned societies in the West Midlands in the last few years with David Johns associate director for the consulting division of Amey holding the chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Amey’s is one of the UK’s leading public services providers, and their commitment and presence has been growing at pace within the West Midlands with the opening of the International Design Hub and key contract wins including MAC 9, West Midlands TechMAC and Birmingham Highways PFI.
