Amey announces start of works to improve safety - Teesside Roads

Amey, a leading support services company, will undertake the design of a £7 million Grade Separated Junction at Long Newton on the A66 between Darlington and Middlesbrough.

The project, undertaken by Amey’s Owen Williams’ business stream, comprises the construction of a bridge and new slip roads that will allow local traffic to cross the dual carriageway and to join the main road safely. The scheme includes a new roundabout and link road to Mill Lane (C140), which provides the main route to Teesside Airport. A new link road to the nearby village of Elton will also be included in the work and will help improve access for cyclists, pedestrians and local traffic.

The new bridge and the approach embankments are to be constructed over glacial material that is several metres thick. This is to act as a safety precaution due to a possibility of settlement of the bridge and embankment. Owen Williams’ geotechnical design will utilise the partial construction of the embankment with ultra lightweight fill to address this settlement issue.

Owen Williams began design work on 1st February, on behalf of the main contractor Interserve. The contract is being let by the Highways Agency under design and build conditions and the works will be complete in Autumn 2008.
