Amey reaches best and final offer (BAFO) in Birmingham Private Finance Initiative (PFI)

Amey, has been selected as a bidder for the Best and Final Offer (BAFO) stage of Birmingham City Council’s £2.2 billion highways management and maintenance Private Finance Initiative (PFI) project, due to be awarded in 2007.

Covering 2,500 kilometres of road network across the West Midlands, this is the largest highways PFI project in the UK. The 25-year contract will involve the upgrading and maintenance of Birmingham’s roads, pavements, bridges, footpaths, street lights and traffic signals.  It will also manage the highway trees and horticulture and maximise the availability of road space across the city.

Amey already employs over 1,000 people in the West Midlands and has recently added to its service offerings in the area with the acquisition of the Birmingham-based professional and technical services firm, Owen Williams.

Chief Executive of Amey, Mel Ewell said: “We are very pleased to have been chosen by Birmingham City Council to progress to this stage of such a prestigious project. Birmingham is enjoying great expansion and Amey is proud to be involved in the continued development of the city.  As a company we place great emphasis on the knowledge and experience of local people and for this reason, we look forward to working with our partners and the local community to help regenerate the city and the West Midlands region.”

Amey has until the end of October to prepare the offer.  Birmingham-based Bid Director, Nick Dawson, and his team, will continue to ensure their proposals reflect and support the development aspirations of the city and add value to the community.  Nick Dawson said: “This project will transform Birmingham.  Working alongside the Council and Birmingham’s residents, tailored services will deliver the renewal of road and pavement surfaces, the maintenance of roadside trees and the upgrading of street lights to ensure safety and security in local neighbourhoods.  Every aspect of the infrastructure will be improved.”
